The pioneers of the area, predominately miners, worked and played hard. Their life was rewarded by the lifestyle that they were able to live. Surrounded by water, the local folk found that they wanted for little. The miners shack below was opposite Swansea Channel. This stretch of water supplied them abundantly with seafood.
It has been reported, by reliable sources, that their diet of oysters and beer led to the rapid increase in population growth around the lake.
Surrounding the lake are some of the most beautiful beaches on the coast. The surf is consistent with plenty of beaches to choose from.
Fraser Park in the South to Stockton Beach in the North. The calibre of surfers that have come from here shows the quality of surf. Mark Richards would be the most notable name of the locals but there are plenty more surfers about the place with the same capability. Surfing owes a lot to this area of coast line and there are many younger ones willing to duplicate the effort.


Many residents that live around the Lake utilise the largest waterway in the State in many different ways. Sailing, skin diving, swimming, fishing and just plain relaxing in the luxury of it all. Marinas cater for the sailing fraternity - Lake Macquarie Yacht Club at Belmont being one of the oldest sailing clubs out of the Sydney metropolitan area.
